The most common species of ant that is usually found invading houses is the Black Garden Ant. Ants are highly organised and it is only the worker ants that will invade places when foraging for food. The worker ants are around 3 to 5mm long and are attracted to sweet foods which they use to feed the queen and larvae.
Mating of ants takes place in the air and only the winged ants are the reproductive males and females.
You can pour a kettle of boiling water down over the nest site as a first step to removing the ants, however this should be followed up by adding insecticidal powder into the hole.
